Trump govt. revokes transgender bathroom guidance
The US administration of Donald Trump has withdrawn federal guidance allowing transgender students to use bathrooms of their choice at public schools.
The guidance was issued last year under former President Barack Obama. It allowed access to bathrooms and locker rooms on the basis of students’ chosen gender identity rather than their biological sex.
The Trump administration announced its repeal on Wednesday. Conservative states including Texas had filed lawsuits demanding the reversal of the guidelines.
Administration officials say the guidance documents did not contain sufficient legal analysis.
They also say each state or school district should study whether to allow people to make such choices, rather than the federal government deciding on the issue.
The latest action is expected to trigger heated debate on the rights of sexual minority people.
US human rights groups have called on the Trump administration to maintain the Obama guidelines. They say transgender people suffer from discrimination and bullying.
