What if we had a culture of speaking about sex?: Harish Iyer at TEDxMasala
Sex and sexuality is a taboo in conversations in India, people would rather brush it under the carpet than have to confront the topic. Harish wants to get rid of this taboo, and start important, and much needed conversations around it, and that too with a touch of humour! Through honesty and humour he tackles about sensitive issues such as sexual abuse and sexual identity, drawing upon personal experiences. A gay man himself, he says something very simple but remarkable- “I am gay, but not Proud. Just like heterosexuals don’t feel the need to be proud of being straight.”
Harish Iyer is an icon for the common people. Scarred by repeated sexual abuse as a child, he is now an Equal Rights Activist, he is best known for his quirky campaigns for the rights of varied genders and sexuality, children and animals. His life and experiences have been the subject of a book and two movies.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
